1. What is EYSC?

EYSC is the abbreviation for the Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee. The Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee helps make sure that decisions taken by Essex County Council (ECC) are in the best interests of young people in Essex. They do this by consulting young people in Essex and making reports and recommendations which are considered by the decision makers at Essex County Council.

2. What does EYSC do?

The Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee investigates issues that matter to young people in Essex. They interview young people, witnesses and experts, consider reports by organisations and debate to find ways forward that everyone agrees with and are in the best interests of young people in Essex.

The Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee report directly to the main Essex County Council Scrutiny Board and are able to ask the questions that need answering for young people.

3. What is scrutiny?

Scrutiny is about -

  • examining decisions that have or are to be made
  • evaluating policies, performance and progress
  • ensuring that consultation of witnesses and evidence etc (if this is necessary) has been carried out
  • highlighting areas of improvement
  • helping to ensure services are effective, efficient and responsive to the needs of young people in Essex

4. Why get involved with the EYSC?

The Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee is able to influence the decision makers at Essex County Council and other organisations, that’s why it’s so important that we have your input and support. Your voice can be heard and you can really have a say.

5. Who can become part of the EYSC?

At the moment this is just a pilot scheme for young people in the South of Essex - Basildon, Castle Point and Rochford. If this pilot is successful, it will be expanded to cover the rest of Essex.

6. How long has the EYSC been running?

The idea of a pilot Youth Scrutiny Committee was first introduced to Essex County Council on 4 December 2008.

7. Do I still have a say if I don’t live in Basildon, Castle Point or Rochford?

Of course! You can always take part in our online polls and the forum.

8. When will my area be represented?

Keep visiting the site regularly as the progress of the pilot will be updated on this site on a frequent basis - if the pilot is successful then further Committees could be established at the end of the year.
