Welcome to the website for the Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee

EYSC HandThe Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee (EYSC) is a pilot project offering young people (13 - 19 or 25 for those with additional needs) in South Essex the opportunity to look at the issues that are important to them regarding all services (not just the ones they use) in their community.

In Essex there are seven Scrutiny Committees made up of local elected councillors from all political parties. They monitor council decisions and review policies to make sure that Essex County Council (ECC) offers the best service that it can. The Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee offers young people the opportunity to look at issues that are important to them regarding all services not just those within their community.

A key aim of the committee is to raise awareness of youth issues within Essex. According to the National Census of Local Authority Councillors 2008, the average age of councillors is 58 years old. The Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee offers opportunities to look at important issues, talk to decision makers and put forward recommendations to make things better/more effective. This means that young people can have a bigger role in the decision making process.
After all, who has better knowledge about issues affecting young people?

The purpose of the Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee, like other scrutiny committees, is to look at important issues, talk to decision makers and put forward recommendations to make things more effective.

Having consulted with over 1,500 young people in South Essex last year, the Committee found that bullying was the most important issue for young people.

"THE LAST LAUGH"

The Essex Youth Scrutiny Committee completed their short film, "The Last Laugh", about bullying and held their Premier at the Empire Cinema at Basildon Festival Leisure Park.  Where were you on Wednesday 17th March 2009?  Were you lucky enough to attend the event?  If you weren't able to attend, don't worry.  An anti-bullying resource pack will be sent out soon to schools in Essex.  Each pack will contain a copy of  "The Last Laugh" and anti-bullying resources for teachers.
